Written in his words…
I was born in Rhodesia but grew up in South Africa, then lived 6 years in England, and now 12 years in New Zealand, so have had a passport for 4 different countries… where should I go for the fifth?
Growing up I went to 11 different schools and lived in 54 different houses before leaving home at 18 to go to University and have now visited 37 different countries and hope to see more.
I’ve had several different career paths so far – electrical, refrigeration technician, hospitality, IT technician, office admin and now have settled on Primary School Teacher. Since teaching I’ve been in over 50 schools and been “in” school for 27 years altogether.
I like eating all sorts of different things. The most notable have been crocodile, Mopani worms (like huhu grubs) and snails. In terms of fruit, I most like Granny Smith apples and I have them with a sprinkle of salt every bite.
My favourite colour is red, favourite author is Terry Pratchett and favourite car is a Tesla P100D, though our Nissan Leaf is as close as I’ll likely come to driving one 😊
My hobbies are reading, watching Netflix, building projects and riding bikes now that the fence building, chicken rearing and pig feeding are in remission.
My favourite genre in reading is fantasy.
Over time, I’ve switched to reading on Kindle and Libby, and I now prefer to read digitally than on paper.
I read avidly, and it seems to have passed on to my oldest son, who now reads more than I do! I can’t keep up anymore.
I’ve only snow skied one time for 3 days, in Switzerland and over 10 years ago now, but I absolutely loved it and was carving down black runs excitedly seeking thrills from day 2!
At 18 I learned to SCUBA dive, as snorkelling had always been a passion, and ventured down to 30m, exploring the Aliwal Shoal off the east coast of South Africa.
Notable dives I’ve since been to are the Blue Hole in Egypt, and the amazing tropical waters of Fiji.
I’m a pretty competent DIYer and have built a 12m² shed, completely renovated an 81m² batch and also converted a bus into a motor home (twice)… though I sacrificed the tip of a finger in the process!
Teaching is my passion but I also love reading up on and figuring out topics of interest to me such as solar, electric vehicles and other technological advances.
